What is hydrostatic testing on a pipeline?

It is a test that fills a new pipeline with water and raises the internal pressure above operating pressure, then holds it to verify there are no leaks or flaws. It is a standard integrity and safety check done before a line goes into service.

Why use water instead of air?

Water is nearly incompressible, so a water-pressure test is far safer than testing with air or gas, which stores a lot of energy. That is why hydrostatic (water) testing is the standard for proving a pipeline.

Hydrostatic Testing

Before a new pipeline carries anything, it has to prove it can hold pressure. Hydrostatic testing fills the line with water, raises the pressure well above operating pressure, and holds it to confirm there are no leaks or flaws in the pipe or the welds. It is one of the last steps before a line goes into service, and it is not a place to cut corners.
